There was the western medieval period and that of the Eastern Empire, which still survived among the splendours of Byzantium for years after the fall of Rome. On the stage the scenery was necessarily very simple.

In the dawning light of the Renaissance and the modern spirit they gradually waned, though in exceptional places and in special revivals they did not altogether cease to be given until the seventeenth century. In the latter case each play might remain all day at a particular station and be continuously repeated as the crowd moved slowly by; but more often it was the, spectators who remained, and the plays, mounted on movable stages, the 'pageant'-wagons, were drawn in turn by the guild-apprentices from one station to another.

Little by little, probably, as time passed, this Easter scene was further enlarged, in part by additions from the closing incidents of the Savior's life. With the spread of humanistic thought, the medieval emphasis on spirituality was gradually replaced by a focus on the more physical characteristics of humans.

The word 'renaissance' is derived from a French word meaning rebirth. In a very general sense, the history of Europe can be divided into three main ages. The period of time during which the European Renaissance fell was between the end of the Middle Ages or medieval period and the beginning of the Modern Age. Another frequent subject of interest was the problem of evil. In these cases the whole plays become vivid studies in contemporary low life, largely human and interesting except for their prolixity and the coarseness which they inherited from the Mysteries and multiplied on their own account.
